2022 is going to be great: Burgweg and Schwarzer Herrgott now available
Viewed on the map, our winery is located where the two Rieslings Burgweg and Schwarzer Herrgott grow qualitatively: At the — northern — tip of the Palatinate. The hand-picked grapes come from higher altitudes, which are known for their high lime content and therefore produce particularly mineral wines. Both bear our straightforward signature and yet are clearly distinguishable. Since the successful introduction of the Black Lord God last year, they have formed a congenial dual leadership. The 2022 vintage is now available.
With the location Schwarzer Herrgott, the northernmost location of the winery, in the coveted Zeller Valley, we secured a fillet that fits perfectly with the wine philosophy. In 2022, we presented a Riesling from the vineyard for the first time (Click here for the blog article), this year we are once again proud of the results of the current year. On September 30, 2022, the grapes could be harvested by hand and in several rounds at autumn temperatures and then left on the mash for 15 hours. The largest part was then aged in stainless steel, smaller parts in used barrique barrels. In May 2023, we carefully cuveted both parts and left them on the fine yeast until the filling at the end of June. The 2022 vintage of Schwarzer Herrgott has salty minerality and a firm acid structure. Amazingly bright in color, at the same time concentrated and very clear in the aromas. On the palate, it is characterized by an elegant coolness, the fruit lingers in the background with notes of pear and pineapple.
“This powerful wine is already a lot of fun today. However, it's worth giving it some more time to mature so that you can enjoy the full spectrum,” says winemaker Axel Neiss at the end of October.
His opponent, Spitzenriesling Burgweg, comes from the same cellar and clearly bears our signature. However, they should not be confused in glass. The Burgweg, whose grapes come from the oldest vineyard on the estate, has a full, extract-rich body, creaminess and ripe aromas of vineyard peach and mirabelle. Due to climatic differences, the healthy grapes were harvested on September 22, eight days earlier than in the Zellertal Valley. In order to extract the aromas and structure, which ensure the strength and fullness of the wine, from the grapes in the best possible way, this Riesling was also mashed for 15 hours. Unlike Schwarzer Herrgott, the aging took place exclusively in used oak barrels. The individual working methods in the cellar, but much more because of the respective terroir and microclimate, make the two top wines so different. Just five kilometers as the crow flies from Schwarzer Herrgott, the Burgweg location in Kindenheim is located under the protection of an old quarry. It has a unique microclimate. Due to the open altitude, the heat-saving and massively limestone-rich soil, there are excellent growing conditions for the Riesling vines, some of which are 50 years old.
